Quantum Information / Algorithms Theorist

At Riverlane, we design new quantum algorithms and quantum circuits to simulate highly correlated quantum systems using fewer qubits or gates than anyone else. This is core to what we do and we need people who can produce world leading research in quantum computing.

Key Aspects of the Role

  • read and discuss academic papers with your team mates, identifying the most important and scalable results;
  • learn about new industrial applications of quantum computers, coming up with new, more efficient algorithms or modifying existing ideas as a result;
  • work with some of the world’s leading hardware groups and learn how quantum algorithms get mapped to physical devices;
  • build Riverlane’s international standing through writing papers and presenting results at conferences as appropriate;
  • contribute to the business development and strategic direction of the company.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in quantum technologies or quantum information theory;
  • evidence of creative, high-quality academic work;
  • strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a track record of communicating scientific results to colleagues and other audiences;
  • experience working both independently and in a research team;
  • passion for translating academic expertise into an applied industrial setting.

Desirable Criteria

  • experience with algorithms for quantum chemistry.

Quantum PhD Intern

At Riverlane, we design new quantum algorithms and quantum circuits to simulate highly correlated quantum systems using fewer qubits or gates than anyone else. This is core to what we do and we need people who can produce world leading research in quantum computing.

This internship scheme is designed to enable a current PhD student in a quantum-related field to translate their expertise into an industrial setting. You will join us at our office in Cambridge, UK, where you will have the opportunity to work alongside our team of software developers, mathematicians, quantum information theorists, computational chemists and computational physicists – all experts in their fields. You will work on a project designed to make best use of your background and skills whilst developing your knowledge of the field of practical quantum computing. You will learn about new industrial applications of quantum computers and how quantum algorithms get mapped to physical devices, coming up with new methods or implementing and modifying existing ideas as a result.

Essential Criteria

  • a current PhD student in a quantum-related field;
  • strong mathematical ability;
  • some programming experience;
  • good written and verbal communication skills.

All candidates must be eligible to live and work in the UK.

Research Software Developer

Key Aspects of the Role

  • read and discuss academic papers with your teammates, coming up with new methods or implementing and modifying existing ideas as a result;
  • design, implement, test, review, debug and optimise research code;
  • analyse experimental data and communicate results in the form of discussions and reports to other team members and clients;
  • build Riverlane’s international standing through writing papers and presenting results at conferences as appropriate;
  • contribute to the business development and strategic direction of the company.

Essential Criteria

  • PhD in a highly numerate subject, such as a science, mathematics, computer science or engineering, or equivalent experience in industry;
  • high level of proficiency in at least one modern programming language;
  • proven ability to understand technical material and translate this into software;
  • strong mathematical ability;
  • strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with a track record of communicating work to colleagues and other audiences;
  • experience working both independently and in a research team.

Desirable Criteria

  • experience with software development tooling (Git, Docker, automated testing, etc.).

Knowledge of quantum computing is not required as training will be given.

We want to know how you approach problem solving so we’ll give you a toy problem to solve prior to the interview. At the interview, we’ll discuss your solution and how you approached it.

Relocation assistance

Riverlane is a tightly knit team and a very collaborative environment so new hires will need to work in Cambridge to be part of day-to-day operations. Riverlane will cover the cost of getting you here.

Start date

We are keen to get started as soon as possible but if you have existing commitments such as a PhD we will be able to accommodate you.

Flexible working

We will consider requests for flexible working but we would prefer if you can make it into the office as much as possible.
